As members know, CUPE 3911 holds an open meeting almost every month where all members can actively participate in the affairs of the local and, by extension, in the affairs of Athabasca University. The idea behind the monthly meetings is to both inform members of significant developments and, even more importantly, to provide opportunities for the members to participate directly in discussing and taking decisions on matters that affect their lives. In other words, the monthly meetings are held by the members for the members.
Monthly meetings are not held in July, August and December for obvious reasons. In October, an annual general meeting is held, in line with our bylaws, where elections of the Executive take place. Monthly meetings are held at the CUPE 474 office at 10989 124th St. We appreciate the assistance of 474 in providing an accessible location. While we prefer face-to-face participation, provision is made for members to call in via teleconference, especially members not in Edmonton.
Prior to each meeting, an agenda is developed. This agenda is open to input from members. It usually undergoes several revisions. While it would be impossible for every meeting to put everything on the table, a sincere attempt is made to include whatever is of importance to members, at the time. Close attention is paid during the meetings to thoroughly discussing the issues and to proposing actual actions that the local and its members can take to defend our rights and interests with unity and determination. Matters are decided by democratic vote of those present.
According to our bylaws, all Executive members are responsible to attend meetings. Currently attendance at our meetings varies, however, we always have enough members to make quorum. That means decisions made are legal and binding. We greatly appreciate the commitment of those who attend our meetings, especially those who come regularly, but we would sincerely like to increase our attendance. We are of the opinion that the more people that participate in discussion and decision-making the better. This is especially true in an era where the main problem facing everyone is how to have a real say in the decisions that affect our lives.
